Romans 13: 11-14
11 Besides this you know the time, that the hour has come for you to wake from
sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed.
12 The night is far gone; the day is at hand. So then let us cast off the works of
darkness and put on the armor of light.
13 Let us walk properly as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in
sexual immorality and sensuality, not in quarreling and jealousy.
14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to
gratify its desires.
The Light of Love - 13: 11-14
You know the time, that
the hour has come for you
to wake from sleep...
The Light of Life (13:11-14)
Summary: The time has come for us to “wake from sleep.” The night is
gone, the day is at hand. Our lifestyles should now match our
new identities. This means that we can no longer live as we
did when we were controlled by our desires. Desire led to
drunkenness, sexual immorality, sensuality, quarreling
and jealousy. We should now “put on the Lord Jesus
Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify
its desire.”
Characters: Napoleon is waking up, ready to face the
new day with all its challenges.
Yawn...

Romans 13: 7-10
7 Pay to all what is owed to them: taxes to whom taxes are owed, revenue to
whom revenue is owed, respect to whom respect is owed, honor to whom honor
is owed.
8 Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another
has fulfilled the law.
9 For the commandments, “You shall not commit adultery, You shall not murder,
You shall not steal, You shall not covet,” and any other commandment, are
summed up in this word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
10 Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.
The Law of Love - 13: 7-10
Owe no one anything, except to
love each other, for the one who
loves another has fulfilled the law.
The Law of Love (13:7-10)
Summary: We should pay ourtaxes and all other debts.
The only continuing debt that believers should have is to
love each other. The commandment to love each other fulfills
the Law as love does no wrong to a neighbor.
Characters: Evasius does not feel like paying her taxes. Philadelphos
is reminding her that she should owe no person anything except love.
He points to the symbol of the loving servant that governs this half of
the Roman Forum, and explains to her what it means. He also tells her
that love fulfils the Law, which is why the symbol of the Law is not to be
found here.
Gmf,
why should I
give them my
money to
waste?
Look

Romans 13: 3-6
3 For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Would you have no fear
of the one who is in authority? Then do what is good, and you will receive his
approval,
4 for he is God's servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he
does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the servant of God, an avenger who
carries out God's wrath on the wrongdoer.
5 Therefore one must be in subjection, not only to avoid God's wrath but also for
the sake of conscience.
6 For because of this you also pay taxes, for the authorities are ministers of God,
attending to this very thing.
A Peace Plan - 13: 3-6
Do what is good, and you will

you do wrong, be afraid...
13: 6

Assigned Authorities
continued (13:6)
Summary: When we pay taxes, we do so for the
sake of conscience and to avoid the wrath of God.
The authorities are “ministers of God” in this matter.
Characters: Revenus the tax collector is
passionate about his job. Even though he is not a
believer and definitely not a popular man, he is in
fact a minister of God.
C’mon
pay up!

A Peace Plan (13:3-6)
Summary: When we submit to the authorities
we have no need to fear them. They are a
source of terror only if you are a
wrongdoer.
Characters: Villianus is hiding from
the authorities. He has a long history
of crime and is a wanted man.

Romans 13: 1-2
1 Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no
authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.
2 Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed,
and those who resist will incur judgment.
A Self Sacrifice - 13: 1-2
Let every person be subject to the
governing authorities. For there is
no authority except from God....
Assigned Authorities
(13:1-2)
Summary: Believers must subject themselves to the
authorities, for God has instituted them.
Characters: Submillius is looking at the Roman
Senate and listening to a declaration by the emperor
Nero. As a believer in Jesus Christ he is wondering
about his attitude towards the Roman authorities,
especially since they have been persecuting his
fellow believers and put many of them to death.
A Self Sacrifice - 13: 1-2
Let every person be subject to the
governing authorities. For there is
no authority except from God....
Hmm,
should I or
should,’t I?
Friends,
Romans,
countrymen, lend
